Hi, my name is James Edward Kaufman, most folks just call me Jim.
When I learned that our current Tax Collector, Deb Flagler wasn’t running for re-election, I knew that I needed to step up to serve the town that I love.

I’m very happy to say that if I’m elected, Deb has agreed to stay on as our Deputy Tax Collector. This means Berne keeps the experience, knowledge, and continuity that no other candidate brings to this office.
“I’ve spent my career standing up for working people and making systems work better. As your Tax Collector, I’ll bring that same focus, with attention to detail, accountability, and a commitment to serve Berne with care and dedication.”
I retired from the United States Postal Service (USPS) after 30 years of service in roles that required precision, accountability, and trust, including data entry, handling of money and budgets, reporting and customer service. I also created and taught USPS training programs and served as Political Mail Coordinator during a presidential campaign — with procedures later adopted nationwide.
I have a long record of leadership, advocacy, and public service. I served as Legislative Director and Shop Steward for American Postal Workers Union (APWU) Local 390, as well as Trustee for the Albany County Central Federation of Labor (ACCFL). I’m currently Vice President of the Capital District Area Labor Federation and a 41-year member of the APWU.
Over the years, I’ve earned 24 certificates from labor studies programs and received several awards, including recognition from the USPS, APWU, and the Solidarity Committee of the Capital District for my communications and organizing work.
In 2015, I was elected PAC Treasurer for the Capital Region for another presidential campaign, filing reports under federal election law for several years.
I’m 72 years old, married 51 years, and a proud father of three. My wife Elizabeth and I live on beautiful Warner’s Lake and are proud to call Berne our home.
